Double vs Triple Glazing in Malta: Which Should You Choose?

Double and triple glazing are both available for modern timber windows in Malta. The extra pane can improve thermal performance, but it also affects weight, opening sizes, daylight, cost and the frame specification.

The right choice depends on what you want the glazing to do:

  • Reduce heat transfer
  • Improve comfort near the glass
  • Control outside noise
  • Keep weight and budget within reason

Technical specifications

These are the standard specification options used as the starting point for a Heritage Apertures estimate. The final recommendation depends on the complete opening, property and project requirements.

Frame profile and glazing basis
68 mm wood frame + 32 mm triple glazing is the standard, lower-cost basis. 78 mm wood frame + 42 mm triple glazing is the higher-cost upgrade for stronger soundproofing and insulation.
Compatibility
A 68 mm wood frame supports glazing up to 32 mm, including 32 mm double or triple glazing. A 78 mm wood frame supports glazing up to 42 mm; 42 mm triple glazing requires 78 mm.
Timber options (wood species)
Oak or Mahogany.
Glazing and glass finish
Double or Triple glazing with Clear or Frosted glass.
Performance options
Swisspacer thermal edging, plus Acoustic, Security or no performance glass.
Default estimate basis
Triple glazing with sun protection and sound/acoustic protection. If no frame profile is chosen, the estimate basis is 68 mm wood frame + 32 mm triple glazing. These are defaults, not customer-confirmed selections.
Default opening basis
Inward-opening tilt and turn. Units wider than about 600 mm are usually split left and right; viewed from inside, the right sash is usually the primary opener.

Double Glazing

Modern double glazing can deliver a strong balance of comfort, weight, appearance and price when it is paired with a well-designed frame and good installation.

It is often the sensible choice where the opening is large, the project has a tighter budget, or maximum thermal performance is not the only priority.

Triple Glazing

Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second insulating cavity. It can provide the highest thermal performance when the frame, hardware and opening are designed for the extra weight.

The best specification depends on orientation, shading, opening size, ventilation needs and the performance of the rest of the building envelope.

Noise and Solar Control

Triple glazing is not automatically the best answer for outside noise. Acoustic glass can be the more targeted choice for traffic, barking dogs, aircraft or other specific noise sources.

In Malta, orientation and shading also matter. A glazing specification should balance heat loss, solar gain, daylight and ventilation rather than focusing only on the number of panes.

Which Glazing Is Right For You?

Choose double glazing when you want a balanced specification with lower weight and initial cost, or when the opening size makes sash weight an important constraint.

Choose triple glazing when maximum thermal performance is a priority and the frame, hardware, opening size and budget support it.
